The Federal High Court in Abuja found Doyin Okupe guilty of breaking the Money Laundering Act. Okupe was the former Senior Special Assistant on Media to former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu, who was in charge of the case on Monday, found Okupe guilty of breaking sections 16(1) and (2) of the Money Laundering Act and accepting more cash than the law allows without going through a bank.
Okupe is the Director General of the Labour Party’s Presidential Campaign Council.
The judge has put a hold on the case until 1:45 p.m.
This is so Okupe can use his right under Section 310 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act to call witnesses to talk about his character.
After that, the judge will say what the sentence is.
