Buba Galadima, a major member of President Bola Tinubu’s New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has demanded that Mahmood Yakubu, the National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), be fired immediately. Galadima claims that Yakubu colluded with other politicians to undermine Nigerians’ democratic will during the previous presidential election.
Galadima told Channels Television on Tuesday that Yakubu’s acts were even more severe than those of former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele, who was earlier ousted from his job. “The INEC chairman must go; what he did is not even comparable to what Godwin Emefiele did,” Galadima said, emphasising that the INEC chairman had committed many offences. He conspired with individuals to undermine Nigerians’ will, which is the most serious criminal a person can conduct.”
Yakubu is accused of jeopardising the integrity of the forthcoming presidential election in 2023. Several political stakeholders have levelled allegations against the INEC chairman, alleging that he rigged the election in favour of President Tinubu. As these allegations acquire traction, calls for Yakubu’s resignation become louder. President Tinubu is scheduled to address the issue and decide on Yakubu’s future as chairman of INEC.
