The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) office in Makurdi has responded to a video that has been going viral on social media. In the video, sacks of old naira notes were found in the capital city’s Wadata market.
The video shows sacks of what look like old naira notes that were found on Tuesday in a big container near Wadata market.
But a commission worker who didn’t want to be named because he wasn’t allowed to talk said that the office heard about sacks of old naira notes and sent people there, but when they got there, they found that the notes were bad ones from the Central Bank of Nigeria.
“Yes, we did hear something about old naira notes. Then, we went to court to get a search warrant, and when we got there, we saw those naira notes that had been canceled.
“The person who owns the old naira notes said he bought them from the Central Bank of Nigeria. The old notes have been cut up and squeezed, so they are not money at all.
“I’ll send you pictures of what was in the sacks that were found,” the official told our reporter over the phone on Tuesday night.”
